Winterisation and Recommission

On your haul out and relaunch forms is a tick box for winterising and recommissioning your engine.  It is advisable to have your  engine winterised when you are not using it to keep it in good health and recommissioned before relaunch.

Winterising

The winterising process includes a full engine service plus extra protection during the winter period.

The salt water strainer is cleaned and the engine is run up.  All the filters are replaced with new and inhibitor is added to the fuel and oil system.  The gearbox oil is changed along with the anode if required.

The fuel system is bled and the fresh water cooling system is checked.  The engine is run up again and flushed with a 50% anti-freeze solution.

The belts and impeller are removed, the air filter blanked and the pulleys taped.  All the electrical contacts on the engine are sprayed with WD40 and the batteries are checked.  If requested on the haul out form, we can remove your battery and store it securely in our battery store for monthly charging.  Any defects are reported so they can be addressed over the winter months if required.

The engineer will leave an "Engine Layup Form" on-board explaining what has been done and the name of the engineer who carried out the work.

Recommission

If the engine has been winterised it will require re-commissioning before the vessel is launched. This involves unblocking the exhaust and the air filter and removing the tape from the pulleys. The belts and impellor are re-instated and the engine / engines are run up and fully tested so they are ready for the coming season.

An “Engine Re-launch Form” will be left on-board informing if the battery switches and engine seacocks are on or off, plus the name of the engineer who carried out the work.
