Osmosis treatment centre

Osmosis is a serious problem that effects hulls of GRP laminated hulls.  The hull must be dried out completely then stripped right back to the laminate before any treatment can take place to repair the damage.

Here at Mylor we want to offer our customers the best possible treatment for these problems and have invested in a “Hotvac”.

“Hotvac” is a relatively new system that uses heating and vacuums to dry out the hull of your boat to a much higher standard than conventional methods. Not only will it remove the obvious water in the hull but also any organic compounds that can cause weakening, corrosion, delamination and blistering.

“The intimate application of controlled heat under high vacuum conditions directly to the surface of the boat’s hull” (www.hotvac.com)

The hull is covered in large pads that are attached to the Hotvac machine, which form a vacuum and heat the area to a uniform temperature. They are left in place for 7-10 days on average, obviously a factor that is dependant on how badly the hydrolysis is in the hull and the moisture is vapourised and pumped away from the hull. This decreases the main part of the treatment process to a matter of weeks instead of having to wait months, maybe years, for the hull to dry properly.

As the drying out stage of the treatment is considerably faster you will be spending less time ashore and more time out on the water enjoying your boat. It also enables you to plan around the treatment as it is easier to estimate a completion date of the procedure thus allowing for more efficient time management.

For those of you that are energy conscious, the Hotvac uses up to 10 times less energy than heat lamps to dry the hull. The use of vacuums means there is a decrease in the temperature needed for the vapourisation process and the intimate connection of the heat source to the hull means it does not need to use so much energy. It is also very safe and will not damage the hull of the boat in any way.

Mylor is the only boatyard in Cornwall to adopt this new system for the treatment of osmosis and with the credit crunch making luxuries like boating even more of a squeeze, it is good to know that there is a money saving, and energy saving, solution.
