Suhaili 50 Falmouth Parade of Sail

Thursday, 14 June, 2018

Marking the 50th Anniversary of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston’s departure at the start of the 1968/9 Golden Globe Race, Falmouth will host a celebratory parade of sail. Vessels from sailing clubs across the world will make the pilgrimage to Falmouth to salute Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and his yacht Suhaili in a parade of sail around Falmouth Harbour along with those competing in the 2018 Golden Globe Race in what is sure to be a colourful and historic sight.

The date is significant as it celebrates the day world-renowned sailor Sir Robin Knox-Johnston set out from Falmouth to win the original Golden Globe Race and in doing so, become the first person to sail single-handed and non-stop around the world 50 years before.

The main Parade of Sail event will see up to 30 competitor boats (including the historic fleet) plus a vibrant flotilla of watercraft depart Custom House Quay on a celebratory tour of Falmouth harbour, taking in Pendennis Point and Castle and St Mawes. It is anticipated that spectators will line Falmouth’s historic waterfront to witness the boats as they go past.
